As the constant companion, nurse, chef and chauffeur of a 14-year-old yellow Lab named Chester, I developed a particular affection and respect for old dogs. Knowing that Chester’s time was limited, I began to write about him. As I shared these stories, people responded with remarkable old-dog tales of their own. So I started collecting these stories and, before I knew it, a book was in the works. Do Old Dogs Dream? is a cathartic ode to my old guy and all old dogs.
Author Harold J. Creel, Jr. will be visiting dogma for a book signing on Friday, June 19th, from 5-8 p.m., during a very special Yappy Hour. He’ll return to the store Saturday, June 20th for their adoption event to benefit the MDSPCA, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. To help raise money for old dogs, you can purchase his book online at www.doolddogsdream.com . It’s also available through Amazon.com for regular purchase.
CHESTER
“Though I am much older
(I prefer ‘mature’)
There’s never a question
If my job’s secure.”
DUFFIE
“While my legs may be short
they still reach the ground
And my ears, long and gorgeous
More for show than for sound.”
MARY FRANCES
“Her name was derived
From an unlikely pair,
A nun and a drag queen
She hopes they don’t care.”
GILBERT
“You see it is cars
with which I’m obsessed
perhaps it’s their speed
with which I’m possessed.”
RICK
“I started out as
A pup in a pound
It was not nearly
As bad as it sounds.”
BELLE
“Made to sleep outside,
Not even a bed
On which I can lay
This old, weary head.”
BAILEY
“At my age they tell me
That I’m geriatric
But frankly, I feel
I’m quite acrobatic.”
